3500 miles through Mexico

Where is Brian?

Missionary Buddies

Brian is back in Mexico for Capitulo Dos (Chapter Two) of his journey. He left Sacramento early one morning on a bus full of Mexican farm workers destined to Tiajuana. He has been staying in missionary camps, tren station floors, overnight buses, hostels, in his tent (which he is glad that he brought) and with friends in various parts of Mexico.

San Cristobal Street Market Monte Alban Ruins all to myself After living in Guadalajara for six months the goal was set...to see Mexico from beginning to end...which would lead him 3500 miles via bus, hitching, ferry, tren, and foot. The journey started out of his front door in Sacramento with what turned into a 13 hour bus ride to Tiajuana. From there he has been venturing south through Baja California, stopping at the picturesque seaside town of EnseƱada before catching a few rides on his way through various fishing villages such as Mulege in the city-less 1000 miles that is beautiful Baja California on down to a friends house at Todos Santos. From Todos Santos, Brian traveled by bus to La Paz and took a ferry across the sea of Cortez to enter into mainland of Mexico in Topolobambo, Sinaloa. He visited a few small towns in the Copper Canyon and observed the Ruramuri Native American Tribes who are known for their ability as excellent runners. After a few days with Pancho Villa in Chihuahua he continued on to visit friends in Guadalajara, where he stayed with his buddy Hector, the former ace marathoner and now running guru for the city of Guadalajara.

Chilaquiles with Hector in Santa Lucia El Canyon de Sumidero (with crocs)

They worked together for a week and in the evenings enjoyed visiting the Corn Fair in the tiny pueblo where Hector lives. He has stopped by in Mexico city and Oaxaca City where he has been testing out the local cuisine...chocolate, worms, grasshoppers, mole, and tlyayudas. He is enjoying fantastic morning runs which recently have taken him to places such as the ruins atop Monte Alban to watch the sunrise from the lush hills above Oaxaca City. From Oaxaca it was a 12 hour sweaty 2nd class bus ride overnight to the beautiful highland town of San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico. He plans to keep heading south towards Guatemala, all the while keeping his eyes and ears open for volunteer opportunities and jobs.
